A few months ago, I got a message from a former bandmate I hadn’t played with for more than twenty years. He asked if I’d be interested in joining a new project, something “in the style of Scary Pockets“. Funky, live, loose. It hit a nerve. In the best way.
I haven’t seriously played keys in well over 12 years, so a lot of thoughts and fears about being “too rusty” immediately started to surface. A lot has changed, not just in me, but in the world of music gear. MainStage, MIDI controllers, patches, backups, USB hubs, Stream Decks…turned out it’s not scary at all, it’s a playground now. I’m deep in the process of rebuilding my rig from the ground up and I’ll definitely be writing more about that journey soon.
“DV // Keys” will soon get its own section on this site, a home for all things music: gear, workflows, live gigs, and maybe even some jams.
But more than anything, playing again has reminded me how good it feels to be in it. Present and focused… Music has always been medicine for me, and this is just what the doctor has ordered.
It feels great to be back!
